Three\u00a0years ago, the Newberry Library posted a note<\/a>\u00a0about a 1922 cartoon from the\u00a0Chicago Tribune<\/em>: “The New Yorker\u2019s Idea of the Map of the United States” by\u00a0John T. McCutcheon bears a strong resemblance to Saul Steinberg’s\u00a0famous 29 March 1976\u00a0New Yorker<\/em> cover<\/a>, whose inspiration is often traced to Daniel K. Wallingford’s A New Yorker’s Idea of the United States<\/em><\/a> (1937). See the gallery below.<\/p>\n
