News of the thefts was finally made public last month: see coverage from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pittsburgh.cbslocal.com\/2018\/03\/19\/carnegie-library-rare-books-stolen\/\">CBS Pittsburgh<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/435236\/314-rare-books-stolen-from-pittsburghs-carnegie-library\/\"><em>Hyperallergic<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lj.libraryjournal.com\/2018\/04\/industry-news\/suspects-no-answers-rare-book-theft-pittsburghs-carnegie-library\/\"><em>Library Journal<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/ae\/books\/2018\/03\/19\/Carnegie-Library-rare-atlases-maps-books-Japanese-prints-stolen-Oliver-Room\/stories\/201803190007\"><em>Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/triblive.com\/local\/allegheny\/13443929-74\/thief-pulled-off-carnegie-library-heist-over-extended-period\"><em>Pittsburgh Tribune-Review<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/314-stolen-items-carnegie-librarys-rare-books-room-worth-5-million-180968538\/\"><em>Smithsonian<\/em> magazine<\/a>, among others.\u00a0The police do have suspects in the thefts, which had apparently taken place over a long period of time; the total value of the stolen items is around $5 million.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abaa.org\/images\/newsletter_pdf\/Pittsburgh_Thefts_List_F-295-17_Sheet1.pdf\">A full list of the stolen items<\/a> (PDF) has been posted, and includes maps by Hondius, Jefferys, Ogilby and Ortelius, as well as two copies of the Italian translation of Ptolemy&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Geography<\/em>. Make no mistake: as thefts of rare maps and books go, this is a staggeringly large incident.
