At the elite Tokyo gallery where he works, he sells antique maps by selling the stories that he sees within their traces: their contribution to progress, their dramatic illustrations, their exquisite compasses. But no compass or cartography can guide him through the events that will follow the sudden and unexpected offer of a job in America.&#8221; The description and\u00a0reviews (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geolounge.com\/review-the-consolation-of-maps\/\">GeoLounge<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/the-consolation-of-maps-by-thomas-bourke-austere-and-elusive-debut-novel-1.3537534\">the<em>\u00a0Irish Times<\/em><\/a>)\u00a0portray this as more a literary novel than a mystery or thriller; I&#8217;ll have to check it out for myself.
