Sieber<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Traffic.<\/strong> Traffic congestion is a key feature of mobile mapping, and predicting it involves looking at historical data. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/transportation\/2018\/07\/to-better-predict-traffic-look-to-the-electric-grid\/564326\/\"><em>CityLab<\/em> reports<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.trc.2018.05.008\">a recent study<\/a> suggests that time-of-day electricity usage patterns can be used to predict traffic congestion patterns. A household that starts using power earlier in the morning gets up earlier and presumably will go to work earlier.) It&#8217;s another variable that can be put to use in traffic modelling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trail difficulty.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/searchandrescue\/comments\/8wlz88\/rescue_due_to_marking_of_trails_on_openstreetmap\/\">OpenStreetMap doesn&#8217;t differentiate between &#8220;walk-in-the-park&#8221; trails and mountaineering routes<\/a>, and that may have had something to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/father-and-daughter-rescued-from-side-of-treacherous-b-c-mountain-1.4000757\">hikers needing to be rescued from the side of a British Columbia mountain<\/a> recently. The hikers apparently used OSM on a mobile phone app, and in OSM trail difficulty is an optional tag. The wisdom of using OSM in safety-critical environments notwithstanding, this is something that OSM editors need to get on.
