{"id":1786484,"date":"2018-10-24T09:50:55","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T13:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/?p=1786484"},"modified":"2018-10-24T09:50:55","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T13:50:55","slug":"mapping-natural-disasters-in-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2018\/10\/mapping-natural-disasters-in-france\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Natural Disasters in France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In response to the latest round of flash floods in France, <em>The Local<\/em> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.fr\/20181018\/where-to-live-in-france-to-be-sure-to-avoid-natural-disasters\">a piece looking at natural disasters in France<\/a> that points to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetvinfo.fr\/meteo\/seisme\/cartes-inondations-secheresse-dans-quelles-villes-francaises-faut-il-habiter-pour-etre-a-l-abri-des-catastrophes-naturelles_2611742.html\">a set of interactive maps from <em>France Info<\/em><\/a> (in French; page doesn&#8217;t work well in Safari) that show the number of natural disasters, by commune, since 1982, as well as the number of disasters due to flooding and drought. The maps indicate where the disaster hot spots are in France and (to some extent) where they aren&#8217;t: only 3.5 percent of French communes have never had a disaster declaration in that period. Sixty percent of the disasters were due to flooding; <em>The Local<\/em> also points to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmglobal.com\/research-and-resources\/global-flood-map\/flood-map\">Global Flood Map<\/a>: zooming in sufficiently shows the zones for high and moderate risk of flooding.
