E<\/span>very year<\/span> at about this time I post a gift guide that lists some of the noteworthy books about maps that have been published this year. If you have a map-obsessed person in your life and would like to give them something map-related\u2014or you are<\/em> a map-obsessed person and would your broad hints to have a link\u2014this guide may give you some ideas.<\/p>\n

A total of 17 books are included in this year\u2019s guide, loosely organized by theme. The focus is on books that are visual and of interest to the general reader;<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> this does not even try<\/em> to be a complete list of what\u2019s been published this year. For that, check out the Map Books of 2018<\/a> page, which may suggest other gift ideas to you.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

First, the Headlines<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>The biggest book this year, at least by weight, is without question the new (15th) edition of the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. The Comprehensive<\/em> is the granddaddy of the Times<\/em> atlas line: big and slipcased and heavy, it dwarfs all but the National Geographic<\/em> atlases. It also has the most ridiculously massive\u2014but functional\u2014bookmark I’ve ever seen<\/a>. I’ve received a review copy and should have a review for you very soon. Buy at Amazon<\/a> (Canada<\/a>, U.K.<\/a>)\u2014it’s significantly discounted today.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If that’s a little big for you, the Oxford Atlas of the World<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which is updated every year, is more manageable in size and price. Its 25th edition came out in October. Buy at Amazon<\/a> (Canada<\/a>, U.K.<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Canada at least, the most significant map-related book of the year is undoubtedly the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. See my post about it<\/a>. This four-volume slipcased set is available in English and French<\/a> versions, as well as online<\/a>. Buy at Amazon<\/a> (Canada<\/a>, U.K.<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Those looking for a book that is about maps in all their splendour, of all kinds, from all periods, should take a look at All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. It’s by our friends Betsy Mason and Greg Miller, who write the eponymous blog for National Geographic<\/em>. I just<\/em> got a review copy within the last week so I haven’t had a chance to review it yet, but that’s coming. Buy at Amazon<\/a> (Canada<\/a>, U.K.<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you want something fun<\/em>, check out The Ordnance Survey Puzzle Book<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a \u201cmix of navigational tests, word games, code-crackers, anagrams and mathematical conundrums.\u201d It\u2019s out in the U.K. only; North Americans will have to try third-party sellers on Amazon<\/a> (or elsewhere) or order directly from British vendors. Historical Maps<\/h2>\n

Several books this year collect beautiful reproductions of vintage maps. I’ve reviewed two of them: Tom Harper’s Atlas: A World of Maps from the British Library<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (reviewed here<\/a>) and Susan Schulten’s History of America in 100 Maps<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (reviewed here<\/a>). Add to that list Thomas Reinertsen Berg’s apparently idiosyncratic Theatre of the World<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (blog post<\/a>) and The Golden Atlas<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, where Edward Brooke-Hitching focuses on cartography and exploration.<\/p>\n

Imaginary Places<\/h2>\n

The Writer’s Map: An Atlas of Imaginary Lands<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is a gorgeously illustrated collection of essays by writers and illustrators about how maps and stories inspire one another. As I say in my review on Tor.com<\/a>, it’s basically a writer’s love letter to maps. Buy at Amazon<\/a> (Canada<\/a>, U.K.<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like The Lands of Ice and Fire<\/em>, Star Trek Stellar Cartography<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the new edition of which came out in October, is a collection of folded maps. See blog post<\/a>. Buy at Amazon<\/a> (Canada<\/a>, U.K.<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Manchester: Mapping the City<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is a collection of vintage maps, whereas Seattleness: A Cultural Atlas<\/em><\/strong><\/a> brings its own colourful and data-driven cartography to the table. Artist Adam Dant has two books out this year: Maps of London and Beyond<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is an outgrowth of his maps for Spitalfield Life (my blog post<\/a>); Living Maps: An Atlas of Cities Personified<\/em><\/strong><\/a> looks at 28 cities around the world.<\/p>\n
