The Sheldon Tapestry Map of Oxfordshire, one of four <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sheldon_tapestries\">tapestry maps<\/a>\u00a0of English counties commissioned in the late 16th century by Ralph Sheldon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2019\/jun-10\">is on display<\/a> at the Bodleian&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/weston\">Weston Library<\/a>. The tapestry is partially complete\u2014intact it would have measured 3.5 \u00d7 5.5 metres\u2014and on display for the first time in a century, having gone through a &#8220;painstaking&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/our-work\/conservation\/research-and-collaborations\/sheldon-tapestry-maps\">restoration<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-oxfordshire-48599051\">BBC News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/londonist.com\/london\/maps\/map-elizabethan-london-sheldon-oxford-tapestry\"><em>Londonist<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Oxfordshire tapestry map replaces a display of the Worcestershire tapestry map that had been running for the past four years: both were donated to the Bodleian by Richard Gough in 1809. The Bodleian acquired a sizeable section of the Gloucestershire map in 2007 (<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.maproomblog.com\/2008\/01\/the_sheldon_tapestry.php\">it went on display the following year<\/a>); other parts are in private hands.
