While a map served as the MacGuffin of Episode 7, maps of the <em>Star Wars<\/em> universe have been a thing for a while, at least in terms of supporting material.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starwars.com\/news\/star-wars-maps-charting-the-galaxy\">this 2015 article on the <em>Star Wars<\/em> website<\/a> about the history of maps of the Galaxy Far, Far Away, the first official map was produced in 1998. Since then the <em>Star Wars<\/em> galaxy\u2019s map has been surprisingly consistent despite the addition of a huge amount of material (movies, TV shows, ancillary books and comics) and the canon shift that took place when Disney bought Lucasfilm: older maps\u2014such as fan websites like <a href=\"http:\/\/starwarsatlas.uw.hu\/thelist.htm\">Modi\u2019s<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/wrvh.home.xs4all.nl\/galaxymap\/index.html\">W. R. van Hage\u2019s<\/a>, or the 2009 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0345477642\/maproom-20\"><em>Star Wars: The Essential Atlas<\/em> <\/a>(updated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starwars.com\/news\/star-wars-the-essential-atlas-online-companion\">online appendices<\/a>)\u2014may not include planets that appear in later movies and TV shows (e.g., Jakku, Scarif or Lothal), but what does appear stays in the same place from map to map (i.e., Tatooine and Coruscant are in the same place). Jason Fry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/starwars.fandom.com\/wiki\/Systems_Database\">System Database<\/a> keeps track of things.<\/p>\n<p>The most up-to-date map I\u2019ve been able to find is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbernberg.com\">Henry Bernberg<\/a>\u2019s interactive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swgalaxymap.com\">Star Wars Galaxy Map<\/a>, which has several advantages. Built using ArcGIS\u2014he\u2019s a GIS professional\u2014and hosted using Carto, it has toggleable layers and is searchable (many maps online are simple images, which is tricky when you\u2019re looking for a specific planet). It is, in other words, a <em>useable<\/em> map, which is a rare thing in science fiction and fantasy, and almost essential when dealing with an imaginary universe of <em>Star Wars<\/em>\u2019 size.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From a certain point of view, The Force Awakens is the story of how a rare and valuable map was kept out of the hands of an unscrupulous and extremely motivated collector.
