This year\u2019s is the 11th.<\/p>\n<p>I have to confess that I\u2019m fond of the <em>National Geographic<\/em>: compared to other atlases it does its own thing with political maps that eschew coloured relief and explain every little boundary dispute and controversy in little red letters. It\u2019s also enormous, larger in dimension than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2018\/12\/the-times-comprehensive-atlas-of-the-world-15th-edition\/\"><em>Times Comprehensive<\/em><\/a> (though not as heavy) and with a list price of $215\/\u00a3170 is slightly more expensive. <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.nationalgeographic.com\/products\/national-geographic-atlas-of-the-world-11th-edition\"><em>National Geographic<\/em>\u2019s page<\/a> doesn\u2019t go into detail as to what changes were made for the 11th edition, which is a pity. At $90, it slots between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0008320314\/maproom-20\"><em>Times <\/em><em>Universal<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0008183767\/maproom-20\"><em>Concise<\/em><\/a> atlases in terms of list price, though its page count is that of the more expensive <em>Concise<\/em>. It\u2019s also updated every year; this year\u2019s edition is the 26th. And <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/atlas-of-the-world-9780190065812?lang=en&amp;cc=us\">the publisher\u2019s page<\/a> does list some of the updates. (Eswatini and North Macedonia? Yes!)<\/p>\n<p>As for <a href=\"https:\/\/timesatlas.com\/product-category\/world-atlases\/\">the <em>Times<\/em> line of atlases<\/a>, the most recent to be updated was the third-tier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0008320314\/maproom-20\"><em>Times Universal Atlas<\/em><\/a> ($50\/\u00a380), the 4th edition of which came out in August. Prior to that, the 5th edition of the affordable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0008320292\/maproom-20\"><em>Times Desktop Atlas<\/em><\/a> ($35\/\u00a320) was released in February. The 15th edition of the top-of-range <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0008293384\/maproom-20\"><em>Times Comprehensive Atlas<\/em><\/a> ($200\/\u00a3150) came out in the fall of 2018: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2018\/12\/the-times-comprehensive-atlas-of-the-world-15th-edition\/\">I reviewed it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World atlases are still a thing, and the first of this month saw the publication of two new editions of venerable world atlases.
