Maintained by two geographers at Laval University, it\u2019s extremely helpful in that it shows the per capita rate as well as the raw numbers, which highlights (for example) just how many cases there are in the Eastern Townships, and how few there are here in the Outaouais, as a percentage of the population. The number of people tested per zone? Not included. The population [per] zone? Not included.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kennethfield\/status\/1244274675015766016\">Kenneth Field<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to maintain social distancing in a dense urban environment like New York, but that doesn\u2019t mean that rural areas are inherently safer. Identifying areas that would be hit harder by the coronavirus can be a factor of age and various social vulnerability factors (such as poverty and vehicle access); John Nelson looks at the intersection of age and social vulnerability in <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/557dcd77ad504d5faec7e2c5506c86e0\">this StoryMap<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/adventuresinmapping.com\/2020\/03\/09\/social-vulnerability-age-and-coronavirus\/\">this blog post<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2020\/03\/19\/rural-areas-may-be-most-vulnerable-during-coronavirus-outbreak\/?arc404=true\">The <em>Washington Post<\/em>\u2019s maps of vulnerability<\/a> are based on age and flu rates. A third example is <a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.jvion.com\">Jvion\u2019s COVID Community Vulnerability Map<\/a>, which is based on anonymized health data from some 30 million Americans [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/azure-powered-covid-vulnerability-map\/\"><em>ZDNet<\/em><\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> maps the number of cases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/world\/coronavirus-maps.html\">at the global level<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/coronavirus-us-cases.html\">for the United States<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/coronavirus-county-data-us.html\">It\u2019s also making available county-level coronavirus data<\/a> assembled from various states and counties, since there seems to be no single agency tracking this at the national level.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Want to see the true potential impact of ignoring social distancing? You might have seeen <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TectonixGEO\/status\/1242628347034767361\">Tectonix\u2019s video on Twitter<\/a>, drawn from the location data of mobile devices that were active at a single beach in Florida over spring break, and followed them home. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/this-map-shows-the-potential-impact-of-ignoring-physical-distancing-1.4873147\">As CTV News reports<\/a>, the video has drawn fire from privacy advocates, though Tectonix asserts that the data was anonymized and collected with user consent. Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/03\/20\/us\/coronavirus-model-us-outbreak.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em> explores several scenarios of coronavirus spread<\/a>, comparing what might happen with some control measures, more severe control measures, and no action taken at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For mapmakers:<\/strong> Matthew Edney on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mappingasprocess.net\/blog\/2020\/3\/12\/how-to-map-the-covid-19-outbreak\">how<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mappingasprocess.net\/blog\/2020\/3\/11\/how-not-to-map-the-covid-19-pandemic\">how not<\/a> to map the COVID-19 pandemic.
