After explaining maps from first principles, it covers the state of the art in terms of cartography, computer mapping, photogrammetry and surveying circa 1971, including the production of topographic maps, maps of the Moon and maps of, erm, southeast Asia. Since U.S. government publications are public domain, it\u2019s available in several locations, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/gov.dod.dimoc.30277\">Internet Archive<\/a> (above), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x5pszh9\">DailyMotion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/338892726\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TOPOCOM itself had a short history. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asprs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/pers\/1969journal\/aug\/1969_aug_750-754.pdf\">Created in 1968<\/a> (PDF) as the successor to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Army_Map_Service\">U.S. Army Map Service<\/a>, it lasted less than four years before being merged into the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) in 1972. Which in turn was merged into the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) in 1996.
