It shows train positions in real time and provides service bulletins in a single location. It also promises, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90566212\/nycs-new-subway-tool-settles-the-biggest-debate-in-maps\">says <em>Fast Company<\/em>\u2019s Mark Wilson<\/a>, to bridge the long-standing (and often acrimonious) divide between geographically accurate transit maps (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2020\/02\/michael-hertz-1932-2020-father-of-the-new-york-metro-map\/\">Hertz<\/a>) and diagrammatic network diagrams (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/tag\/vignelli\/\">Vignelli<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/470020599\">Here\u2019s a video<\/a> about how the new digital map came to be:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Map\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/470020599?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>On Transit Maps, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transitmap.net\/new-york-real-time-2020\/\">Cameron Booth has some criticisms of the map and its approach<\/a>. \u201cThe main selling point of this map is that it has the clarity of a diagram but the fidelity of a geographical map\u2014\u2018The best of both worlds!\u2019 the articles happily proclaimed this morning\u2014but the reality is more like \u2018Jack of all trades; master of none.\u2019 As much as I try, I simply can\u2019t see any real benefit to this approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another point Booth makes, and I can confirm, is that the map isn\u2019t just slow; it\u2019s\u00a0<em>profoundly<\/em> slow. On Safari it makes my current-generation, eight-core Core i7 iMac with 40 GB of RAM and a\u00a0Radeon Pro 5500 XT\u00a0feel like a snail; it\u2019s a little better on Chrome, and on my third-generation iPad Air, but it\u2019s still slow and janky and not very pleasant to use. Well, it\u2019s a beta.
