It\u2019s always been somewhat controversial because it\u2019s a closed system, and because of the steps What3words has taken to protect its proprietary database and algorithms: it\u2019s issued takedown notices relating to the compatible, open-source WhatFreeWords (details <a href=\"https:\/\/justpaste.it\/39hat\">here<\/a>), to the point of <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/04\/30\/what3words-legal-threat-whatfreewords\/\">threatening a security researcher over his tweets about it<\/a> last April. Which, you know, got noticed.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also been the subject of <a href=\"http:\/\/googlemapsmania.blogspot.com\/2021\/05\/whatswearwords.html\">several parodies<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/what3emojis.com\">what3emojis<\/a> (emojis instead of words), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fourkingmaps.co.uk\">Four King Maps<\/a> (four swear words, UK and Ireland only on account of a lack of swear words, which frankly disappoints me) and Maps Mania\u2019s own <a href=\"http:\/\/googlemapsmania.blogspot.com\/2021\/04\/what2figures.html\">April Fool\u2019s joke<\/a> for this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/what-two-figures.glitch.me\">what2figures<\/a>, which expresses any point on the globe in just two numbers (I\u2019ll wait).<\/p>\n<p>But more recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56901363\">it\u2019s come under criticism<\/a> for having similar sounding word combinations for addresses only a few miles apart: see <a href=\"https:\/\/cybergibbons.com\/security-2\/why-what3words-is-not-suitable-for-safety-critical-applications\/\">Andrew Tierney\u2019s blog post<\/a> (which expands upon <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cybergibbons\/status\/1387164507705860097\">this Twitter thread<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/what3words.medium.com\/how-does-what3words-handle-similar-combinations-of-words-d480c94483c7\">What3words\u2019s response<\/a>.
