Like the Tabula Peutingeriana, it\u2019s only taken out for display at intervals to protect it from the elements. Discovered when the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Topkap\u0131_Palace\">palace<\/a> was being converted into a museum in the 1920s, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piri_Reis_map\">map<\/a> is the western third of a portolan chart drawn on gazelle skin parchment in 1513 by Ottoman admiral <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piri_Reis\">Ahmet Muhiddin Piri<\/a> (\u201cReis\u201d\u2014admiral\u2014was his title). It was an expansive compilation of ancient and contemporary sources much like the Waldseem\u00fcller map, and is fascinating in its own right; in recent years, though, it became one of the \u201cproofs\u201d of a nutty theory involving ancient civilizations and polar shifting.
