{"id":1805941,"date":"2022-01-27T18:04:08","date_gmt":"2022-01-27T23:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/?p=1805941"},"modified":"2022-01-27T18:04:08","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T23:04:08","slug":"tomtom-says-its-algorithms-avoid-potentially-dangerous-routes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2022\/01\/tomtom-says-its-algorithms-avoid-potentially-dangerous-routes\/","title":{"rendered":"TomTom Says Its Algorithms Avoid Potentially Dangerous Routes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It probably has <em>nothing<\/em> to do with Google redirecting traffic up poorly maintained mountain roads during a blizzard in California last month (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2022\/01\/google-rerouted-traffic-up-poorly-maintained-mountain-roads-during-a-blizzard\/\">previously<\/a>), but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomtom.com\/blog\/navigation\/map-data-to-suggest-the-safest-route\/\">TomTom has posted a piece<\/a> explaining how its algorithms avoid sending drivers down potentially dangerous routes in Finland even though, on paper, they\u2019re shorter.<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.tomtom.com\/blog\/navigation\/map-data-to-suggest-the-safest-route\/\"><p>TomTom\u2019s routing and location technology recognizes that the shorter route to Koli National Park is on winding unpaved roads, made up of sand and gravel, and it takes that into consideration when computing a route for a driver. It places significant importance on this information. [&#8230;] Even though the unpaved route is shorter, it\u2019s still not considered \u201cbetter\u201d than the longer paved route when all things are considered.
