(News flash: Paris has lots of people in it.) And those circles are <a href=\"https:\/\/observablehq.com\/@jgaffuri\/striped-circle?collection=@jgaffuri\/striped-circles\">striped circles<\/a>: the proportion of the votes is indicated by the area taken up by a given colour. <a href=\"https:\/\/observablehq.com\/@jgaffuri\/election-map?collection=@jgaffuri\/striped-circles\">The map of the first round results<\/a> shows more stripes (because more candidates) but is by department, so it\u2019s a little easier both to read and to see how the <a href=\"https:\/\/observablehq.com\/collection\/@jgaffuri\/striped-circles\">striped circle format<\/a> works.
