{"id":1811584,"date":"2023-01-16T16:44:38","date_gmt":"2023-01-16T21:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/?p=1811584"},"modified":"2023-02-03T09:39:45","modified_gmt":"2023-02-03T14:39:45","slug":"the-rationale-behind-overture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2023\/01\/the-rationale-behind-overture\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rationale Behind Overture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of links regarding the Overture Map Foundation announcement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2022\/12\/the-overture-map-foundation\/\">previously<\/a>) afford some context and background. <a href=\"https:\/\/maphappenings.com\/2023\/01\/03\/overture-maps-foundation\/\">James Killick chalks up the decision to launch Overture<\/a> to a combination of needs to control costs and maintain control while ensuring interoperability: \u201cthe reasons for the birth of OMF seem to be valid and defensible.\u201d Meanwhile, the<a href=\"https:\/\/thegeomob.com\/podcast\/episode-163\"> Geomob Podcast interviews geospatial veteran Marc Prioleau<\/a>, in which (among other things) Marc observes that the companies behind Overture (including Meta, where he\u2019s currently at) and OpenStreetMap are not on the same page: OSM\u2019s focus does not serve the companies\u2019 needs, and changing that focus would harm the OSM community.
