I’ve been following Van Duzer’s work on horror vacui, the lack of empty spaces on maps, for some time (1, 2); that work seems to be taken up by at least the first chapter on this new book on cartouches, which is available for free as an open-access download. “This lavishly illustrated book is the first systematic exploration of cartographic cartouches, the decorated frames that surround the title, or other text or imagery, on historic maps. It addresses the history of their development, the sources cartographers used in creating them, and the political, economic, historical, and philosophical messages their symbols convey. Cartouches are the most visually appealing parts of maps, and also spaces where the cartographer uses decoration to express his or her interests—so they are key to interpreting maps. The book discusses thirty-three cartouches in detail, which range from 1569 to 1821, and were chosen for the richness of their imagery.” $144. Amazon (Canada, UK), Bookshop.

More: Map Books of 2023.

Three books that have come out or are coming out this year that deal with maps of early modern Europe: Navigations: The Portuguese Discoveries and the Renaissance by Malyn Newitt (Reaktion, 24 Apr). “Navigations re-examines… More

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

10
30,1015,1622,312,1511,1085
post-1816243","post","type-post","status-publish","format-link","hentry","category-antique-maps","tag-books","tag-cartouches","tag-fra-mauro","tag-history-of-cartography","tag-portugal","tag-van-duzer","post_format-post-format-link
Out this month from Amberley Publishing: Mapping the Airways. "Drawing on fascinating and unique material from the British Airways archive, curator Paul Jarvis focuses on the beautiful map artwork used over nearly 100 years of history to chart our voyages through the skies—from early adverts to twenty-first-century on-board moving maps—and the…
https://i0.wp.com/www.maproomblog.com/xq/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/mapping-the-airways-300x210.jpg?resize=350%2C200
A new scholarly book about the use of monsters on early modern maps has been brought to my attention. Surekha Davies's Renaissance Ethnography and the Invention of the Human: New Worlds, Maps and Monsters (Cambridge University Press, June) explores the use of both monsters and indigenous peoples on Renaissance maps. "Giants, cannibals…
https://i0.wp.com/www.maproomblog.com/xq/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/renaissance-ethnography-210x300.jpg?resize=350%2C200
The W.
