Some were stuck for hours. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/travel\/article\/google-apologizes-trapping-calif-drivers-desert-18524896.php\">Google has since apologized<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/sheeple-blindly-follow-google-maps-into-desert-road-nig-1851055097\"><em>Jalopnik<\/em> describes this<\/a> as yet another case of blindly following, but I think this is a more specific failure mode. Rerouting due to road closures or traffic jams opens up routes that the algorithm would normally deprecate, and catches more drivers unprepared. It\u2019s one thing when that means a quiet residential street gets an expressway\u2019s worth of traffic, quite another when the second best choice is a dirt track\u2014or a 500-mile detour.
