NSK.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/virtualna.nsk.hr\/napoleonov-atlas\/\">An online exhibition<\/a> by the National and University Library in Zagreb (<abbr title=\"Nacionalna i sveu\u010dili\u0161na knji\u017enica u Zagrebu\" lang=\"hr\">NSK<\/abbr>) focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalna.nsk.hr\/?pr=i&amp;id=11186\">an atlas of Adriatic sea ports<\/a> commissioned by Napoleon after the French Empire\u2019s annexation of Italy in 1805. <a href=\"https:\/\/nsk.hr\/en\/news\/online-exhibition-spotlighting-napoleons-atlas-a-gem-of-cartographic-heritage-in-nsks-collections\/\">The Library\u2019s English-language announcement<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Commissioned by Napol\u00e9on Bonaparte himself and marked by exceptional scientific and artistic value, the 1806 atlas consists of charts and topographical views of the eastern part of Croatia\u2019s Adriatic coastline, whose annexation to Napoleon\u2019s empire prompted the atlas\u2019s creation by famous cartographers Charles-Fran\u00e7ois Beautemps-Beaupr\u00e9, Ekerlin and Paolo Birasco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The atlas\u2019s significance in documenting the first scientifically based hydrographic surveying of the Adriatic in history and thus being an indispensable resource in any Adriatic-related research is matched by its exquisiteness in terms of its purely artistic features.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Library\u2019s copy of the atlas was acquired at a public auction in London in 1979. <a href=\"https:\/\/nsk.hr\/en\/nsk-collections\/nsk-map-collection\/\">More about the NSK\u2019s map collection<\/a> (in English; all links in Croatian unless otherwise indicated).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An online exhibition by the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) focuses on an atlas of Adriatic sea ports commissioned by Napoleon after the French Empire\u2019s annexation of Italy in 1805.
