Mexicans will still get <em>Gulf of Mexico<\/em>, while the rest of us will get both names. See coverage at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c8634nwxd46o\">BBC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/27\/google-maps-to-show-gulf-of-america-after-government-updates.html\">CNBC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/28\/tech\/google-maps-gulf-of-mexico-america\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/jan\/28\/google-maps-will-rename-gulf-of-mexico-as-gulf-of-america-in-us?CMP=oth_b-aplnews_d-1\">Guardian<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/27\/google-maps-will-soon-rename-gulf-of-mexico-to-gulf-of-america\/\">TechCrunch<\/a><\/em>, among many many many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not sure why some people were expecting Big Tech to lead the resistance (especially a trillion-dollar company), and over one of the easiest things to undo once this is all over: Google has made a point of accommodating government requests on its maps, showing the \u201cright\u201d borders and place names to the right users. See previous post: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2016\/04\/google-maps-as-non-state-authority\/\">Google Maps as Non-State Authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not everyone is falling into line. The British government has no plans to refer to it as the Gulf of America, nor will British maps change unless it becomes the most commonly used name: see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/trump-gulf-mexico-america-uk-b2685587.html\">The Independent<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/us\/politics\/2025\/01\/23\/britain-will-not-recognise-trump-new-name-gulf-of-mexico\/\">The Telegraph<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/the-definitive-source\/announcements\/ap-style-guidance-on-gulf-of-mexico-mount-mckinley\/\">the Associated Press is updating its stylebook<\/a> in a way that splits the difference, following Trump on Denali\/Mount McKinley because it\u2019s fully within his purview but pointing to the Gulf\u2019s international status: \u201cThe Gulf of Mexico has carried that name for more than 400 years. The Associated Press will refer to it by its original name while acknowledging the new name Trump has chosen.
