James Killick makes the point in <a href=\"https:\/\/maphappenings.com\/2025\/06\/05\/worldinpocket\/\">the final installment of his \u201c12 Map Happenings that Rocked Our World\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Well today there are estimated to be 7.2 billion smartphones in use around the planet. They are used by 4.7 billion people.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/maphappenings.com\/2025\/06\/05\/worldinpocket\/#df518642-a631-4b97-b1b9-dc50eae3f939\">2<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;That\u2019s about 58% of the world\u2019s population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And every one of those devices has access to a maps app. And every maps app has a map of the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you boil it all down: at least one out of every two people on the planet now has a detailed map of the whole world in their pocket.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Process that thought. Before smartphones with data plans, car navigation meant GPS receivers with onboard maps that needed to be manually updated, often for a fee, or they\u2019d slowly go out of date. And before that? Well, discussion of that (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/MAPSL\/posts\/24551747204413416\">example 1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/paulrusof.bsky.social\/post\/3lqqok6fph22o\">example 2<\/a>) is a good way to make people feel old on the Internet. It meant a needing to own collection of paper maps. It meant <em>knowing how to navigate from a map<\/em>, which ain\u2019t nothing\u2014and was never universal. It meant asking for directions if you didn\u2019t, or if you didn\u2019t have the map you needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA GPS in every pocket is one of the few truly great things about the smartphone age,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/jeffveillette.bsky.social\/post\/3lqrzokqows2a\">wrote Jeff Veillette on Bluesky<\/a>, and I\u2019m hard pressed to disagree.
