Small Washingtoniana Collection<\/a> at the George Washington University Museum collects historical documents and other items relating to the history of Washington, DC. The\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em> has a profile of its patron, Albert H. Small, who donated\u00a0the collection to the university in 2011, and the collection itself.\u00a0Of interest to us is the\u00a0collection&#8217;s maps of the capital city, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/88690604\/\">Arnold Map of 1862<\/a> (above):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Published during the Civil War, the map\u2019s detailed, topographical view of Washington included all 53 forts that guarded the city. Secretary of War\u00a0Edwin Stanton<b>\u00a0<\/b>ordered all the maps confiscated lest they fall into Confederate hands. Small has one. There\u2019s a 1671 map of Maryland, too, the second map of the colony ever published, and a 1904 map of the St. Elizabeths Hospital grounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably the best map collection outside the Library of Congress,\u201d Goode said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Small Collection isn&#8217;t online (its <a href=\"https:\/\/museum.gwu.edu\/albert-h-small-washingtoniana-collection\">web page<\/a> has very little to it); to see its holdings, you&#8217;ll have to <a href=\"https:\/\/museum.gwu.edu\/small-center\">visit the Museum<\/a>.
