Every year at about this time I post a gift guide that lists some of the noteworthy books about maps that have been published this year. If you have a map-obsessed person in your life and would like to give them something map-related\u2014or\u00a0you\u00a0are<\/em>\u00a0a map-obsessed person\u2014this guide may give you some ideas.<\/p>\n

This year, as you will see, I’ve organized the books by theme: we have five\u00a0atlases of\u00a0unusual and non-existent places, several colouring books, and a large number of historical map collections, among other books.<\/p>\n

This is by no means a complete list of what’s\u00a0been published in 2016. The Map Books of 2016<\/a> page includes many, many other books that might also suggest themselves as gift possibilities.<\/p>\n

Atlases of the Unusual and Non-Existent<\/h4>\n

Books that call themselves atlases, but really aren’t, are thick on the ground this year:\u00a0these are illustrated compendiums of\u00a0fascinating, unusual or simply made-up places around the world. In\u00a0The Spectator<\/em>, Alex Burghart looks at three of them<\/a>:\u00a0Atlas Obscura<\/em><\/a> (which I reviewed here<\/a>), Edward Brooke-Hitching’s\u00a0Phantom Atlas<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0Travis Elborough’s\u00a0Atlas of Improbable Places<\/em><\/a>. To which I’d add Aude de Tocqueville’s\u00a0Atlas of Lost Cities<\/em><\/a>, a catalogue of abandoned places that came out last April, and Malachy Tallack’s\u00a0Un-Discovered Islands<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Children, crafts and colo(u)ring Books<\/h4>\n

Colouring books (or, if you’re American, coloring books) have been all the rage lately, and the past year has seen several such books with maps as their subject matter: A-Z Maps came out of the gate early back in October 2015, with\u00a0Maps: A Colouring Book<\/em><\/a>. Since then, we’ve seen Gretchen Peterson’s\u00a0City Maps: A Coloring Book for Adults<\/em><\/a>, the Ordnance Survey’s\u00a0Great British Colouring Map<\/a><\/em>, and the re-emergence of William Hole’s 17th-century illustrations of Michael Drayton’s poetry, repackaged as a 21st-century colouring book called\u00a0Albion’s Glorious Ile<\/em><\/a>\u2014which is available both as a single volume and pamphlet-sized sections<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0colouring books aren’t for kids any more, but you’re looking for something child-sized, consider Justin Miles’s Ultimate Mapping Guide for Kids<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

If making\u00a0art is your thing, but you’re not so much about\u00a0the colouring books, look at Jill Berry’s latest book on personal mapmaking,\u00a0Making Art From Maps<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Historical Maps<\/h4>\n

These books explore some aspect of old and historical cartography. (Maps of the 20th Century and Great Britain get their own sections, below.)\u00a0Cartographic Japan<\/em><\/a> is a collection of essays\u00a0exploring Japanese\u00a0maps from the\u00a0late 1500s.\u00a0China at the Center<\/em><\/a> (reviewed here<\/a>)\u00a0accompanies an exhibition of two pivotal Chinese world maps.\u00a0Great City Maps<\/em><\/a> collects historical and contemporary city maps. Jeremy Black’s\u00a0Maps of War<\/em><\/a> is a history of war cartography.\u00a0Treasures from the Map Room<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a diverse sampling of the Bodleian Library’s extensive cartographic holdings\u00a0(I’m currently working on a review).<\/p>\n

The Twentieth Century<\/h4>\n

Art, marketing and propaganda meet in the 20th Century.\u00a0Paul Jarvis’s\u00a0Mapping the Airways<\/em><\/a>\u00a0draws\u00a0from the British Airways archives to provide a history of aeronautical cartography.\u00a0War Map<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is the companion volume to an exhibition of pictorial conflict maps that wrapped up earlier this month.\u00a0And speaking of companion volumes, don’t forget the big one:\u00a0Maps and the 20th Century: Drawing the Line<\/em><\/a>\u00a0accompanies the British Library’s current map exhibition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Great Britain in Maps<\/h4>\n

Old maps of Britain, particularly at the city and county level, continue to find a renewed existence in book form. Birlinn continues its line of regional atlases of historical maps with\u00a0Oxford: Mapping the City<\/em><\/a> and\u00a0Scotland: Mapping the Islands<\/em><\/a>. Also seeing print this year was\u00a0Somerset Mapped<\/em> and a reprint collection of John Speed<\/a>\u2019s county maps called\u00a0Britain’s Tudor Maps<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

New York, New York: Maps and the City<\/h4>\n

New York City is the subject of two new books in which art, story and cartography intersect: Katherine Harmon’s third volume of map art, You Are Here: NYC: Mapping the Soul of the City<\/em><\/a>; and Rebecca Solnit’s third city atlas,\u00a0Nonstop Metropolis<\/em><\/a>. (A review of\u00a0You Are Here: NYC<\/em> is forthcoming.)<\/p>\n

Data into Maps<\/h4>\n

Where the Animals Go<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>provides beautiful maps of animal tracking data,\u00a0People and Places<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a human atlas of the\u00a0United Kingdom, and\u00a0Speaking American<\/em><\/a> maps the American vernacular: “who says what, and where they say it.”<\/p>\n

World Atlases<\/h4>\n

When it comes to big, satisfying world atlases, the most recent to come out are the\u00a0Oxford Atlas of the World<\/a><\/em>, which is updated every year, and the\u00a0Times Concise Atlas of the World<\/em><\/a>. The\u00a0Concise<\/em> is the second-largest of\u00a0the Times<\/em> world atlases<\/a>:\u00a0see the\u00a0comparative chart<\/a>. (The largest atlases\u2014the Times Comprehensive<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and the National Geographic<\/em><\/a>\u2014were\u00a0last revised in 2014.)<\/p>\n
