Unlike U.S. presidential elections, it&#8217;s by popular vote, with the top two vote-getters moving on to a second round in two weeks&#8217; time.<\/p>\n<p>The major candidates&#8217; support was distributed unevenly around the country. Media organizations used several different methods to show this. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/04\/23\/world\/europe\/french-election-results-maps.html\">The\u00a0<cite>New York Times<\/cite> used a choropleth map<\/a>, showing who among five candidates (including Lassalle, excluding Hamon, who finished fifth but does not appear to have won a commune: ouch) finished first on a commune-by-commune basis. Of course, when you have four candidates finishing within a few points of one another, when you win a district, you don&#8217;t necessarily win by much. (@gbalavoine) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gbalavoine\/status\/856611869922136072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 24, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Both the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Le Figaro<\/em> use geographical maps, which can be misleading because of the number of votes concentrated in large cities, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/elections-presidentielle-legislatives-2017\/2017\/04\/25\/pourquoi-la-simple-carte-n-est-pas-toujours-la-meilleure-forme-pour-raconter-une-election_1565064\">as <cite>Lib\u00e9ration<\/cite>\u2019s Julien Guillot points out<\/a>. (This comes up in most countries&#8217; elections, to be honest\u2014certainly the ones where it&#8217;s the popular vote, rather than the constituency, that&#8217;s being looked at.)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slate.fr\/story\/144490\/cartes-candidat-premier-tour-presidentielle-commune\"><cite>Slate<\/cite> uses a cartogram<\/a>\u00a0to compensate for that. (Both of these\u00a0pages are in French.)<\/p>\n<p>For those seeking local results rather than analysis, several French media organizations provide them\u00a0through a very similar map interface: see, for example, the online results pages for <a href=\"http:\/\/graphics.france24.com\/results-first-round-french-presidential-election-2017\/\">France 24<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/elections\/resultats\/\"><cite>Le Figaro<\/cite><\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/data\/france\/presidentielle-2017\/\"><cite>Le Monde<\/cite><\/a>. Each begins with a map of France: clicking on a\u00a0<i>d\u00e9partement<\/i> provides results for that <i>d\u00e9partement<\/i> that includes a map showing each commune, which can also be clicked on. For some reason\u00a0neither France 24 nor\u00a0<cite>Le Monde<\/cite> show actual vote totals at the local level, which\u00a0doesn&#8217;t seem sensible in\u00a0an election by popular vote.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a couple of outliers. <a href=\"http:\/\/community.powerbi.com\/t5\/Data-Stories-Gallery\/French-5th-Republic\/m-p\/121902\">This page<\/a> looks at the results from\u00a0all presidential elections under the French Fifth Republic. And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.francetvinfo.fr\/elections\/presidentielle\/carte-ces-56-communes-ou-marine-le-pen-n-a-fait-aucune-voix_2159674.html\">this page<\/a> marks the 56 communes in which Marine Le Pen received not a single vote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>France held the first round of its presidential election this past\u00a0Sunday.
