British Library.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This week the British Library <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/news\/2017\/april\/the-british-library-launches-online-landscape-imagery-resource\">launched<\/a>\u00a0an online collection of digitized &#8220;topographical materials&#8221; (i.e., views\u00a0of and writings about places) called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/picturing-places\">Picturing Places<\/a>. More than 500 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/picturing-places\/collection-items\">items<\/a>\u2014paintings, prints, drawings, texts and yes, maps\u2014so far, sorted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/picturing-places\/themes\">theme<\/a> and with dozens of\u00a0accompanying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/picturing-places\/articles\">articles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/picturing-places\/about-the-project\"><p>Picturing Places demonstrates that topography involves far more than straightforward \u2018pictorial evidence\u2019 of what a place looked like in the past. We showcase some of the Library\u2019s most treasured topographical materials, including Tudor views collected by Robert Cotton and maps and views owned by George III. But much of this material remains uncharted, and is being brought to wider attention for the first time. The first phase of Picturing Places features over 500 collection items, most never published before, and over 100 articles providing fresh perspectives and new ideas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of these digitized items is\u00a0one of the Library&#8217;s\u00a0crown jewels: the gigantic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/klencke-atlas\"><em>Klencke Atlas<\/em><\/a> presented to Charles II in 1660, all of the pages of which can now be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/picturing-places\/articles\/the-klencke-atlas\">viewed online<\/a>.\u00a0How do you digitize an atlas that is 1.76 by 2.31 metres wide when open?
