{"id":5383,"date":"2012-09-07T17:38:27","date_gmt":"2012-09-07T21:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2012\/09\/dung-kai-cheungs-atlas\/"},"modified":"2017-10-22T12:00:05","modified_gmt":"2017-10-22T16:00:05","slug":"dung-kai-cheungs-atlas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2012\/09\/dung-kai-cheungs-atlas\/","title":{"rendered":"Dung Kai-cheung&#8217;s Atlas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A book has been brought to my attention that sounds relevant to my interests: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/023116100X\/maproom-20\">Atlas: The Archaeology of an Imaginary City<\/a><\/em> by Dung Kai-cheung, an English translation of which is now out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cup.columbia.edu\/book\/978-0-231-16100-8\/atlas\">from Columbia University Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/023116100X\/maproom-20\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-cover alignright\" style=\"width: 258px; height: 320px;\" src=\"http:\/\/jonathancrowe.net\/images\/2012\/dung-atlas.jpg\" alt=\"Book cover: Atlas by Dung Kai-cheung\" \/><\/a>From the publisher&#8217;s blurb: &#8220;Much like the quasi-fictional adventures in map-reading and remapping explored by Paul Auster, Jorge Luis Borges, and Italo Calvino, Dung Kai-cheung&#8217;s novel challenges the representation of place and history and the limits of technical and scientific media in reconstructing a history. It best exemplifies the author&#8217;s versatility and experimentation, along with China&#8217;s rapidly evolving literary culture, by blending fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in a story about succeeding and failing to recapture the things we lose. Playing with a variety of styles and subjects, Dung Kai-cheung inventively engages with the fate of Hong Kong since its British &#8216;handover&#8217; in 1997, which officially marked the end of colonial rule and the beginning of an uncharted future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I will get back to you on this one once I&#8217;ve bought it and read it.
