Among other things, she writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/tech\/2017\/10\/24\/16527970\/bad-internet-maps\"><p>The map is bad, is my point, and obviously bad, and I sincerely wish that we didn\u2019t have to talk about it. But we do. Because maps like this one aren\u2019t merely birdbrained schlock: They are a social media plague, a scourge that can reduce just about any social network to gibbering in-fights in the space of a few virally shared minutes. We\u2019re all susceptible; we\u2019re all defenseless. A dumb internet map with incendiary falsehoods is coming for all of us, and there is just about nothing we can do to stop it.<\/p>\n<p>The formula goes something like this: Map plus declaration of definitive statewide preference equals profit. Profit here means eyeballs or clicks or reshares or, most likely, some combination of all three, especially the last one, because it turns out that there are few sentiments more appealing than <em>Oy, check out the terrible things the cretins in [Bad State] get up to<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Consider some other recent viral highlights. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/what-each-state-hates-map_us_596f9a4ae4b05453c5cd18ce\">This Map Shows What People Hate the Most in Each State<\/a>\u201d (using data from a brand-new dating app that no one outside a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/culture\/features\/a9978346\/hater-dating-app-brendan-alper\/\">handful<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/we-tried-hater-the-dating-app-that-matches-people-based-on-what-they-hate_us_58937240e4b07595d05a400c\">of<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/irl\/hater-dating-app-review\/\">stunt<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/2017300050\/review-what-happened-when-i-tried-hater-dating-app\">pieces<\/a> seems to have used, and which was obviously trying to drum up interest). There are maps showing states\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/entertainment\/the-scene\/Map-Shows-Favorite-Holiday-Movies-By-State-406954265.html\">Favorite Holiday Movies<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.complex.com\/pop-culture\/2016\/06\/map-shows-every-state-favorite-reality-tv-show\">Favorite Reality TV Show<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wideopencountry.com\/this-map-shows-your-states-favorite-romantic-comedy-movie\/\">Favorite Romantic Comedy<\/a> (using an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cabletv.com\/blog\/states-favorite-holiday-movie-map\/\">arbitrarily arrived at<\/a> combination of AMC user ratings\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amc.com\/movie-guide\/christmas-movies?kbid=91215\">what?<\/a>\u2014and Google Trends data). \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplemost.com\/map-shows-favorite-food-every-state\/\">This Map Shows the Most Popular Food in Every State<\/a>\u201d (using Pinterest recipes <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pinterest.com\/en\/what-world-are-we-eating-food-faves-alabama-australia\">specifically selected<\/a> for their range). Even <em>The New York Times<\/em> has gotten awfully close to its own Map of Dubious Adorations, publishing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2014\/11\/18\/dining\/thanksgiving-recipes-across-the-united-states.html?_r=0\">a 50-state anthology of Thanksgiving classics<\/a> in 2014, in which the effort to differentiate by state yielded questionable dishes like \u201cgrape salad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The truth is we\u2019re all very boring, and our preferences aren\u2019t all that different.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Worth reading in full.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that even though their methodologies are shoddy and their conclusions are dubious, clickbaity maps like these are\u00a0<em>popular<\/em>. The competition for attention is fierce, and maps are a quick and dirty way of generating traffic. My traffic skyrockets whenever I post a link to something even remotely like these maps (xkcd is usually a safe bet), and if I resorted to posting maps like these all the time, I&#8217;d be making\u00a0<wbr \/><em>much<\/em> <wbr \/>more money at this.
