It&#8217;s by no means a comprehensive list, but if someone in your life is just a <em>little<\/em> bit obsessed about maps (and if you don&#8217;t have such a person, why don&#8217;t you?), and you&#8217;re looking for something to get them, this list might be of use.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these books you&#8217;ve seen me blog about before; others I&#8217;m mentioning for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Historical Maps<\/h3>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/1906663912\/maproom-20\">Mappa Mundi: Hereford&#8217;s Curious Map<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Sarah Arrowsmith (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.logastonpress.co.uk\">Logaston Press<\/a>, April 2015). &#8220;The first chapter of the book tackles some of the questions asked by the many people who visit Hereford Cathedral today to see the Mappa Mundi. Who made the map? Did they think the world was flat? How was it made, and where? The book then shows us the map seen through the eyes of a medieval visitor to the cathedral.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0008141304\/maproom-20\">Great Escapes: The Story of MI9&#8217;s Second World War Escape and Evasion Maps<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Barbara Bond (Times Books, October 2015). A history of the escape maps produced for prisoners of war. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2015\/07\/three-books-on-wwii-maps\/\">My blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-inline\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"http:\/\/jonathancrowe.net\/images\/2015\/map-books-2015-hist.jpg\" alt=\"Map Books of 2015: Historical Maps\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0393060322\/maproom-20\">Revolution: Mapping the Road to American Independence, 1755-1783<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Richard H. Brown and Paul E. Cohen (<a href=\"http:\/\/books.wwnorton.com\/books\/detail.aspx?id=4294987184\">W. W. Norton<\/a>, October 2015). &#8220;When warfare erupted between Britain and her colonists in 1775, maps provided graphic news about military matters. A number of the best examples are reproduced here, including some from the personal collections of King George III, the Duke of Northumberland, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Other maps from institutional and private collections are being published for the first time. In all, sixty significant and beautiful cartographic works from 1755 to 1783 illustrate this intriguing era.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0008136580\/maproom-20\">Mapping the Second World War<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Peter Chasseaud (Collins, October 2015). A collection of historical maps; a sequel to Chasseaud&#8217;s 2013 book <em>Mapping the First World War<\/em>. Appears to be available in Britain only. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonathancrowe.net\/2015\/07\/three-books-on-wwii-maps.php\">My blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0226534693\/maproom-20\">The History of Cartography, Volume Six: Cartography in the Twentieth Century<\/a><\/b><\/em> edited by Mark Monmonier (<a href=\"http:\/\/press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/H\/bo4149962.html\">University of Chicago Press<\/a>, May 2015). The sixth installment of the massive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geography.wisc.edu\/histcart\/\">History of Cartography Project<\/a> takes two physical books and nearly two thousand pages to cover mapmaking in the twentieth century. (Volumes one through three <a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uchicago.edu\/books\/HOC\/index.html\">can be downloaded as PDFs<\/a>. Volumes four and five are still in preparation.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2015\/07\/history-of-cartography-project\/\">My blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Map Collections<\/h3>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/0714869449\/maproom-20\">Map: Exploring the World<\/a><\/b><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.phaidon.com\/store\/general-non-fiction\/map-9780714869445\/\">Phaidon Press<\/a>, September 2015). A revised and expanded edition of Mark&#8217;s compilation of every urban transit map on the planet. A rare look at &#8220;illustrated&#8221; or conceptual (rather than strictly geographic) maps. &#8220;This book maps the origins and history of creative cartography, analyzes why our brains so easily relate to conceptual maps, presents how professional artists create illustrated maps, and showcases the works of contemporary map illustrators from around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-inline\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"http:\/\/jonathancrowe.net\/images\/2015\/map-books-2015-coll2.jpg\" alt=\"Map Books of 2015: Map Collections\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/1515275221\/maproom-20\">Atlas of Prejudice: The Complete Stereotype Map Collection<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Yanko Tsvetkov (CreateSpace, July 2015). Yanko Tsvetkov&#8217;s maps of stereotypes and prejudices are a staple of the cartographic Web. The <em>Atlas of Prejudice<\/em> contains all the maps from his two previous self-published collections, plus 25 more. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2015\/09\/atlas-of-stereotypes\/\">My blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/a-fwd.com\/uk=thmaro-21&amp;ca=maproomca-20&amp;com=maproom-20&amp;asin-uk=071818114X&amp;asin-ca=006238922X&amp;asin-com=006238922X\">Vargic&#8217;s Miscellany of Curious Maps<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Martin Vargic (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/vargics-miscellany-of-curious-maps\/9780718181147\/\">Michael Joseph<\/a>, October 2015\/<wbr \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780062389220\/vargics-miscellany-of-curious-maps\">HarperCollins<\/a>, December 2015). Quirky, high-quality maps of idiosyncratic things from a teenage Slovakian design student. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2015\/10\/vargics-miscellany-of-curious-maps\/\">My blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Maps and Literature<\/h3>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/o\/ASIN\/1936976862\/maproom-20\">Plotted: A Literary Atlas<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Andrew DeGraff (<a href=\"http:\/\/zestbooks.net\/plotted\/\">Zest Books<\/a>, October 2015). DeGraff&#8217;s distinct and idiosyncratic maps aren&#8217;t necessarily of books you&#8217;d expect maps for (e.g., <em>A Christmas Carol<\/em>); these are maps of the stories, not their setting, which means a completely different perspective that takes into account both time and distance travelled. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maproomblog.com\/2015\/08\/plotted-a-literary-atlas\/\">My blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><b><a href=\"http:\/\/a-fwd.com\/uk=thmaro-21&amp;ca=maproomca-20&amp;com=maproom-20&amp;asin-uk=0008105758&amp;asin-ca=0544636341&amp;asin-com=0544636341\">The Art of The Lord of the Rings<\/a><\/b><\/em> by Wayne G.
