E<\/span>very year<\/span> at about this time I post a gift guide that lists some of the noteworthy books about maps that have been published this year. If you have a map-obsessed person in your life and would like to give them something map-related\u2014or\u00a0you\u00a0are<\/em>\u00a0a map-obsessed person and would your broad hints to have a link\u2014this guide may give you some ideas.<\/p>\n

Once again I’ve done my best to organize the books by theme.\u00a0This is not a complete list of what\u2019s\u00a0been published in 2017. That’s what the Map Books of 2017<\/a>\u00a0page is for: that page includes many, many other books that might also suggest themselves as gift possibilities.<\/p>\n

It shouldn’t be a secret that I haven’t seen or read everything on these lists; I go by what information is publicly available. But two books I\u00a0have<\/em> seen, and\u00a0can<\/em> recommend. Both Stephen J. Hornsby’s\u00a0Picturing America: The Golden Age of Pictorial Maps<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (reviewed here<\/a>) and\u00a0The Red Atlas: How the Soviet Union Secretly Mapped the World<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by John Davies and Alex Kent (reviewed here<\/a>) are beautiful collections of historically significant maps with informative accompanying text.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Magnificently Miscellaneous<\/h2>\n

\"londonist-mapped\" <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>\n

These books gather maps that are, shall we say, a bit off the beaten track.\u00a0Cinemaps<\/em><\/strong><\/a> does for movies what his 2015 book\u00a0Plotted<\/em><\/a> did for books: it maps the storylines.\u00a0Londonist Mapped<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a collection of hand-drawn maps of the city; it’s out in the U.K. only for now. Meanwhile, James Cheshire and Oliver Uberti’s\u00a0Where the Animals Go<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a very-interesting-looking collection of maps of animal tracks made from field biologists’ tracking data,\u00a0finally has a U.S. edition.<\/p>\n

Historical Map Collections<\/h2>\n

If you like collections of old maps, of course there’s\u00a0Picturing America<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The Red Atlas<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, mentioned above. Other options: the companion guide to the British Library’s 2016 map exhibition<\/a>,\u00a0Maps in the 20th Century: Drawing the Line<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, saw publication in the U.S. earlier this year; Philip Parker’s\u00a0History of Britain in Maps<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is out now in the U.K. and coming to North America soonish; and Peter Whitfield’s\u00a0Charting the Oceans<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0London: A Life in Maps<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(the latter accompanying a previous<\/em> British Library exhibition<\/a>)\u00a0got new editions in 2017.<\/p>\n

An Expensive Historical Atlas<\/h2>\n

Earlier this year<\/a>, Princeton University Press<\/a> published the English translation of Andrea Carandini’s\u00a0Atlas of Ancient Rome<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. I’ve heard it’s gorgeous. At $200 (\u00a3150), it’s certainly expensive. But a 1,300-page, two-volumed, slipcased, historical atlas of ancient Rome\u00a0might be, for the right person, absolutely the right gift. (See\u00a0the\u00a0book website<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Atlases of Nonexistent and Unusual Places<\/h2>\n

\"undiscovered-islands-us\" <\/div> <\/div>
\"explorers-atlas\" <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>\n

This is a surprisingly well-populated genre of books: compendia of unusual geographies, obscure locations, map quirks and odd facts. Not so map-heavy as the other sections, but no less interesting to map fiends like us.<\/p>\n

Alastair Bonnet’s\u00a0Beyond the Map<\/em><\/strong><\/a> explores disputed enclaves, emerging islands and other idiosyncracies of geography (a U.S. edition is coming in 2018). Bj\u00f8rn Berge’s\u00a0Nowherelands<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0looks at out-of-the-way countries that once existed, but don’t any more.\u00a0Malachy Tallack’s 2016 book about islands that were once thought real but have since been removed from the map,\u00a0The Un-Discovered Islands<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, now has a U.S. edition.\u00a0Piotr Wilkowiecki and Micha\u0142 Gaszy\u0144ski’s\u00a0Explorers Atlas<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(also U.K.-only for now) is an illustrated collection of factoids.<\/p>\n

Other possibilities from last year include\u00a0Atlas Obscura<\/em><\/a> (reviewed here<\/a>), Edward Brooke-Hitching’s\u00a0Phantom Atlas<\/em><\/a>, Travis Elborough\u2019s\u00a0Atlas of Improbable Places<\/em><\/a>, and Aude de Tocqueville\u2019s\u00a0Atlas of Lost Cities<\/em><\/a>. (Like I said: well-populated.)<\/p>\n

World Atlases<\/h2>\n

\"times-mini-7th\" <\/div> <\/div>
\"times-reference-8th\" <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>\n

The\u00a0Oxford Atlas of the World<\/em><\/strong><\/a> gets a new edition<\/a> every year: this year’s<\/a> is the 24th. The various\u00a0Times<\/em> atlases<\/a> come out on a more staggered schedule. This year saw updates<\/a> to the Reference<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (which is inexpensive) and the\u00a0Mini<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (which is cute and tiny and, hint hint, would fit nicely in a stocking).<\/p>\n

For another option that’s still relatively recent, consider the\u00a0Times Concise Atlas<\/em><\/a>, the second largest Times<\/em> atlas and roughly equivalent to the Oxford atlas; the 13th edition<\/a> came out last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n
